Beneath the dense mangrove forests and coastal sands of the Ambergris Caye Island in the Caribbean Sea, which belongs to Belize, lies a vast, silent world - a network of submerged tunnels winding through ancient limestone. Today, this labyrinth is known as Sistema Paloma, the largest documented underwater cave system in Belize, a discovery born of years of dedicated exploration, scientific curiosity, and international collaboration.

Since 2019, the Belize Cave Diving Society has been steadily charting this hidden system. In 2023 the project was accepted to the XDEEP Exploration Support Program and the team was equipped with cutting-edge dive gear, like the STEALTH 2.0 sidemount harnesses, which made their exploration efforts safer and allowed to push the dives even further. More than 11 kilometers of underwater passages have now been mapped. What began with a single descent into the enigmatic Belize Gaping Hole (BGH) has grown into a complex network of entrances and chambers, including a confirmed connection to the Cueva de Maria cenote, with other suspected access points waiting to be verified during the follow up expeditions.

But Sistema Paloma’s significance lies not just in its scale. It’s in what it reveals. In three separate sections, divers have discovered pottery and ceremonial objects left behind by the ancient Maya over 1,200 years ago. These artifacts offer rare insight into sacred journeys into the underworld and place the project at the crossroads of natural wonder and cultural heritage.

With much of the system still unexplored, each dive uncovers new details about the geology, ecology, and ancient history of northern Belize. The project continues, driven by passion, guided by science, and made possible through the right gear, technical precision and international teamwork.
